Despite economic setbacks and losses in the last two years, the Philippines continues to be recognized as among the world’s most innovative economies. In the 2021 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) released in September, the country ranks 51st out of 132 countries, as it sustains the ‘innovation achiever’ status for the third consecutive year. This status is given to countries performing above expectations relative to its predicted performance and level of development, producing more and higher-quality innovation outputs despite the limited innovation resources. Additionally, the country is noted to excel in two key areas—business sophistication and knowledge, as well as technology outputs.[1]

With the fast-paced technological advancement shaping the global economy today, the importance of a strengthened framework for intellectual property (IP) is further accentuated. Well protected and enforced IP rights allow individuals to protect their products, ideas, and their profits. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the largest free trade agreement (FTA) between the ASEAN and its FTA partners, includes an extensive chapter on Intellectual Property which aims to reduce IP-related barriers to trade and investment and promote a business landscape conducive for competition and innovation.

For this reason, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) and the South-East Asia IP SME Helpdesk are organizing its event entitled “Increasing Post-Pandemic Innovation with Intellectual Property”, which will feature discussions on the importance of a robust intellectual property system in driving innovation and sustained growth, as well as in regulating the rapidly evolving digital economy. Further, the virtual event will delve into the IP provisions in the RCEP and its impacts in the Philippine digital economy.
