1. Background:

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, and symbols, names and images used in commerce, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

IP intends to protect intangible assets owned by a person or a company. As a result, these rights are important for enterprises because they may help to protect products or services and can also be used as a beneficial business tool.

Over the past two decades, Cambodia has implemented a series of legal reforms to build its IP system. In March 2018, for example, a validation agreement between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Cambodian Government entered into force, making Cambodia the first Asian country to recognise European patents on its territory. This was a milestone for patent protection, and the system is still in force today.

Furthermore, one of the objectives of Cambodia's National Strategic Development Plan 2019–2023 is to strengthen the private sector and encourage investment by reinforcing IP rights, and a commercial court with IP jurisdiction is also expected to start operating in the country this year.

In this context, EuroCham Cambodia, in association with the South-East Asia IP SME Helpdesk (an initiative of the European Commission), is organising a webinar on "Safeguarding Your Assets: Understanding Intellectual Property in Cambodia" on Thursday, 14 March 2024 from 2 pm – 3 pm (GMT+7).

This free webinar seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • offer an overview of the IP landscape in Cambodia;
  • guide businesses on building effective strategies for protecting IP locally; and
  • enable participants to seek clarification or advice on IP protection and related matters.

The event will be particularly useful for European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) working in or with the Southeast Asia region, aligning with EuroCham's commitment to supporting businesses with essential knowledge on safeguarding their assets.

The webinar will be moderated by EuroCham Cambodia's Service Department.
