WIPO Report: Mapping Innovations - Patents and the Sustainable Development Goals

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently released a report which aims to map global patents to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering valuable insights into patent trends that correspond with the SDGs. It illustrates patenting activities relevant to the SDGs and the status of technology development across these goals. Leveraging the WIPO Technology Concordance, the report examines the correlation between particular technology fields and the SDGs. Furthermore, the study explores the geographical distribution of inventors and jurisdictions for safeguarding patents related to the SDGs. Additionally, it presents a comprehensive analysis of patent owners based in five key regions, underscoring their crucial role in advancing sustainable innovation across diverse industries.

In summary, this report sheds light on the intersection between the UN SDGs and worldwide patent activity, offering essential insights into the role of intellectual property in promoting global sustainability endeavours. It offers both a measurable gauge of the intellectual capital directed toward each goal and a tangible demonstration of the dedication to sustainable development within the global innovation arena.
