Use of cartoons in prepackaged products prohibited in Chile

Following the modifications introduced to "la Norma de etiquetado para alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas (NOM)" (Modification to the Labeling Standard for food and beverages non-alcoholic) in 2020, as of 1 April 2021 there are new obligations applicable to the labeling of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Chile.

The new modifications establish that the use of children's characters, cartoons, celebrities, athletes, pets, and interactive elements is prohibited (games or digital downloads) of prepackaged food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The aim of these modifications banning animated characters in labeling, is to stop encouraging children to consume sugar-laden products, as well as explicitly telling consumers what they are consuming.
