Strong Ties: Virtual  European Union-India Leaders’ Meeting Underscores Strategic Partnership

After the last July 2020 EU-India Summit, the intensity of the relations between the two regions has greatly intensified. As High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell stated in his last speech before the European Parlament: "We are at a crucial juncture in the consolidation of the European Union-India Strategic Partnership."

Only ten months after last July's summit, a virtual  European Union-India Leaders’ Meeting will take place on 8 May 2021, with all European Union 27 Heads of State and Government attending, together with Prime Minister of India, [Narendra Modi] and the Presidents of the European Council [Charles Michel] and the European Commission [Ursula von der Leyen].

With India currently battling an unprecendeted new wave of coronavirus infections, a great part of the meeting will be dedicated to discussing support and future cooperation to build a stronger global health system. However, the political leaders also aim to discuss (among other topics), how trade and investment relations can be further supported from a policy perspective.

Intellectual property (IP) undoubtedly plays a major role across different topics mentioned on the meeting agenda, such as the digital transformation process, and the first meeting of the joint task force on Artificial Intelligence (AI), currently under preparation. We will keep an eye out for the meeting outcomes and share any relevant news and updates on this page.
