Recently, Peru and Mexico confirmed that they have signed the new World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Treaty on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge. This treaty aims to increase transparency and prevent the misuse of patents on these resources and knowledge.
More than 30 countries have signed the treaty, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Uruguay. Once their national processes have been completed and at least 15 parties have ratified or acceded to the treaty, three months must pass before it can enter into force.
