The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on global public health, the world economy and everyone’s daily life. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been remarkable research and innovation efforts to fight the virus and the COVID-19 disease. It is certain that the collaborative actions across organizations, agencies, sectors and borders, is crucial to make meaningful progress in addressing the global challenges faced.
The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) published “Patent Landscape Report” in order to identify and analyse COVID-19 related patenting activities. The report highlights the important and complementary role of the companies, startups, universities and research institutions in the development of COVID-related treatments. It is observed that the universities and research organizations filed nearly as many patent applications as corporations for COVID-19 vaccines during the early months of the global pandemic.
