New EUIPO study: Latest trends of IPR-intensive industries

Last week, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) published a paper about rates of change in industries intensively using intellectual property rights (IPRs). This paper complements a previous discussion paper of the EUIPO, which looked at the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis in IPR-intensive industries in the EU as well as in the four largest EU member states.

By looking at the rates of change of IPR-intensive industries, this new paper now provides a detailed analysis of early signs of future trends. These indicators, also known as diffusion indices, do not provide a quantitative forecasting but rather show when the IPR indicators will change from an acceleration to a deceleration phase (or vice versa) up to several months in advance.

Overall, these diffusion indices demonstrate that the impact of the 2009 and 2020 crises was widespread along most of the IPR-intensive industries and that the current recovery phase is more substantial in three specific European countries, namely France, Spain and Italy.
