New EPO-EIB Study: Financing and Commercialisation of Cleantech Innovation

Teaming up with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Patent Office (EPO) published a new study offering key insights into Europe’s position in the global race for innovation in clean and sustainable technologies. The study centres on companies that are advancing novel patented technologies, shedding light on central players within the European Union's cleantech ecosystems. It compares them with their counterparts in other European countries and the United States, leveraging the collective expertise of the EIB and the EPO to analyse their financing and patenting profiles.

The report reveals a notable 33% increase in cleantech inventions from 2016 to 2021. Over the period spanning from 1997 to 2021, more than 750,000 inventions were published for clean and sustainable technologies, representing nearly 12% of all inventions during this timeframe.

Additionally, the report offers an extensive survey of Europe's cleantech innovators, spotlighting their endeavours in the realm of clean sustainable technologies and identifying the assistance required to bring their innovations to market.
