Establishing a private FM radio station in India requires paying royalties to a Copyright Society that will collect them on behalf of artists or music companies. However, upon the renewal of the contract between the Irish SME and the Copyright Society, the latter claimed that the radio station also had to pay royalties for the rights of the literary works on which the sound recordings were based.
