On September 14, the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), António Campinos, had a meeting in Mexico City with the Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), José Sánchez Pérez. Both offices reviewed the activities conducted under the strategic partnership agreement signed in 2019 and discussed plans for future cooperation. The main focus of the collaboration is to improve the accessibility of the global patent system and provide support to innovators in both Europe and Mexico.
During the meeting a new biennial work plan has been signed. This plan is designed to build upon the successful implementation of their previous cooperation efforts and enable the continuation of joint activities. They also discussed the potential to enhance technology transfer from Europe to Latin America by establishing local hubs and improving access to patent knowledge. Additionally, they initiated the process of assessing the feasibility of a validation system in Mexico, which would allow users to obtain Mexican patents through the EPO's patent granting procedure. This could streamline the patent process and facilitate innovation in Mexico.
