The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published its annual review of the Madrid System. Although Latin America and the Caribbean represented only 1% of the top trade mark applicants in the system, some countries in the region showed remarkable performance.
In 2023, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico were among the top 10 middle-income countries designated for agricultural services, research, and technology. In addition, Mexico recorded a growth rate of 7.9% with 11,267 designations, while Brazil had 10,157 designations.
Even though applicants from Latin America and the Caribbean represent a small fraction of the total, the continued increase in designations and participation in key sectors indicates a positive trend toward greater acceptance and recognition of Latin American trade marks in the global market.
