The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) -division of the commerce and industry ministry that manages investments and intellectual property rights (IPRs)- has recently announced that the Indian government will provide financial assistance to eligible agencies for taking initiatives to promote Geographical Indications (GI). Following the announcement, the DPIIT made available the related operational guidelines for the financial support.
The well-known products in India with GI tags include Basmati rice, Darjeeling Tea, Chanderi Fabric, Mysore Silk, Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea, Thanjavur Paintings, Allahabad Surkha, Farrukhabad Prints, Lucknow Zardozi and Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving.
According to the statement, the goal is to give GI stakeholders a variety of platforms, offering them several chances for company growth and income generation.
With those initiatives, it is also intended to gather data on the socioeconomic status of GI goods producers, their means of subsistence, and other relevant information, which can help might help create appropriate policy interventions.
