India strives to retain more local patent applications

India´s patent filings have been experiencing an explosive growth over the past years. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. In terms of sheer numbers, India is still behind compared to countries like USA or China.

In a recent report presented to the Indian Parlament, it was mentioned that "the lower number of patent filing in India was partly due to inadequate protection provided to patents in India", having Indian undertakings register patents abroad to meet "more robust" Intellectual Property systems.

The Committee agreed with the conclusions of the report and recommended to take the necessary steps to increase the local patent registrations and provide a stronger framework for patent protection.
