Early this year India requested an urgent meeting with the General Council of the WTO in Geneva to discuss the health organizations´ proposed response package against the COVID19 pandemic. India expressed its discomfort with the foreseen agenda and insisted on including the patent waiver proposal.
Such proposal, has its basis on certain provisions of the TRIPS agreement, concerning the prevention or containment of public health emergency situations.
India´s concerns insist on the foreseen impacts of the COVID pandemic in the long term. According to a UCTAD report, developing countries will be 8 trillion dollars poorer by 2025 due to the pandemic´s negative economic impact.
