India Ranks Among the Top 5: Most Patent Applications Filed In the Field of Therapeutics

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic there have been remarkable research and innovation efforts to fight the SARS-COV-2 virus and the related disease. The latest patent landscape report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), provides early observations on the patenting activity which took place in the field of COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics, and compares results with clinical trial data for related candidate vaccines and drugs.

India is one of the top five countries filing the highest number of patents related to COVID-19 therapeutics along with China the US, Republic of Korea, and Germany. The report states that roughly a tenth of those therapeutics’ patents related to traditional medicine. China National International Property Administration (CNIPA) filed over 60% of the of traditional medicine patent applications and the intellectual property offices of India and Republic of Korea were the next biggest recipients.
