EUIPO Report: Update on Green EU Trademarks in 2023

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) released a report on Green EU trademarks in September 2021. The analysis examined the specifications of goods and services from 1996 to 2020, and characterizes green EU trade marks (EUTMs) as those applications incorporating at least one 'green' term in their goods and services descriptions. The most recent update of the report, presently published, covers 80 million terms found in the descriptions of 2,178,384 EUTM direct filings at the EUIPO until 2022.

The report states that the peak number of green trademarks was achieved in 2021, with 21,281 green EUTMs filed. In 2022, there was a decline to 19,659 green EUTMs. However, given that overall EUTM filings decreased even more in 2022, the proportion of green EUTMs continued to rise.

The overall trend of trademark filings in 2022 is that green EUTMs outperformed non-green trademarks. Additionally, green EUTM applications from EU firms exhibited stronger performance compared to those from non-EU applicants, showing increases in both absolute numbers and relative proportions.
