EU and India Conclude 1st Round of Negotiations for India-EU Trade and Investment Agreements

India and the European Union concluded the first round of negotiations for the India-EU Trade and Investment Agreements. Negotiations were held partly onsite in Dehli, but a majority of EU officials joined virtually. The meetings took place over the last week of June covering 18 policy areas of FTA. Plus, seven sessions on investment protection and Geographical Indications (GIs) were held.

Despite the global economic trends, the bilateral trade agreement achieved impressive annual growth of 43.5% in 2021-22, finalising the round of negotiations with a positive outcome.  Currently, the EU is India’s second-largest trading partner after the US and the second largest destination for Indian exports.

The second round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in September 2022 in Brussels.
