Enhancing Digital Copyright Legislation to Empower Europe's Creative Sectors

Copyright

In 2019, the EU's Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market was adopted. However, emerging technologies like generative artificial intelligence (AI) are already posing novel challenges in safeguarding the rights of creators while facilitating the development of digital tools. Research efforts are essential to inform the establishment of a new EU regulatory framework that fosters and safeguards digital art.

In the EU-funded reCreating Europe project, researchers, libraries, copyright experts, and other stakeholders collaborated to explore methods for ensuring culturally diverse production of art and inclusive access for consumers. The outcomes of this project can contribute to Europe maintaining its status as a cultural and economic leader in the creative industries.

The project's extensive research serves as the cornerstone for establishing a robust policy framework, providing guidance in navigating the intricate landscape of copyright law and intellectual property management. The project team has formulated five comprehensive sets of policy recommendations aimed at addressing regulatory gaps and pitfalls while addressing the needs of all stakeholders involved.
