The Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) met in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday 5 February to discuss cooperation in intellectual property matters. The parties have signed a cooperation agreement for a period of four years.
The meeting mainly focused on the activities under EUIPO's IP Key Latin America programme, as well as the continuity of cooperation activities for the coming years. Priority themes for cooperation include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), young inventors and women, as part of broader IP dissemination activities.
The potential of new technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, to improve the efficiency and speed of IP examination without compromising quality was also included in the agenda of the meeting. In this context, the INPI also addressed the need to make progress on issues such as the financial autonomy of the Institute, the review of national IP legislation and interaction with the industrial sector.
