Spotify, the leading music streaming platform, has issued a serious warning to the Uruguayan authorities. The Swedish audio streaming and media services provider has threatened to withdraw from the country if the proposed copyright law reforms are passed.
The central concern of Spotify is the perspective of paying twice for the same music content that has already been licensed by record labels. According to Spotify, these changes would mean a "mandatory additional payment" for music services, on top of the significant amounts it already pays to record labels and authors, which would affect its ability to invest and offer reasonable prices.
