A consolidated statement: India reinforces its IP system

The number of patents granted in India in the past few years has risen by a staggering 572%, from 4,227 in 2013 to 28,391 patents in 2021. Now, the Indian government is striving to bolster the country's IPR ecosystem even further.

“Industry must work in a mission mode along with the Government to achieve the ambitious target for the country to be ranked in the top 25 nations of Global Innovation Index (GII),” minister of state for commerce and industry, Som Parkash, said recently after inaugurating the IP Excellence Awards-cum-Conference on the role of intellectual property in Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

The Indian Government has already been showing a stronger focus and commitment to reinforce IP protection within Indian borders, addressing multiple types of IPR such as patents, trademarks, designs, and Geographical Indications. Currently, India is ranked 46th by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the Global Innovation Index 2021 rankings, up from 48th place in 2020.
