The European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe, recognises European cities at the forefront of fostering dynamic innovation ecosystems. These cities leverage innovation as a catalyst for sustainable growth, social inclusion, and enhanced quality of life.
The Director of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) officially launched the new edition of the Prize during a dedicated event in Braga, Portugal, which holds the title of European Rising Innovative City 2024-25.
The contest features two categories:
- European Capital of Innovation – Open to cities with a population of at least 250 000 inhabitants. The winner receives €1 million, while two runners-up cities each receive €100 000.
- Rising Innovative City – Open to smaller cities with a population between 50,000 and 249 999 inhabitants. The winner receives €500 000, with two runners-up each awarded €50 000.
Cities are invited to submit their applications by 18 June 2025, 17:00 (CET).
