2023 Edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard Published by the European Commission

The European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) is an annual publication that provides a comprehensive evaluation of the research and innovation (R&I) performance of EU Member States as well as selected third countries. It serves as a valuable tool for assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses of national research and innovation systems, enabling countries to identify areas for improvement and focus their efforts to enhance their innovation performance.

Additionally, The Regional Innovation Scoreboard complements the European Innovation Scoreboard, which annually assesses the performance of national innovation systems of EU Member States, as well as other European countries and global competitors.

On 6 July 2023, European Commission published 2023 edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard and the bi-yearly edition of the Regional Innovation Scoreboard. Both Scoreboards report a substantial improvement in the overall innovation performance. At the global level, the EU is still performing slightly better than China and is closing the performance gap with Australia, although the gap with Canada, the Republic of Korea, and the United States has expanded.
