Background (FP7)

means, in the context of FP7 information, knowledge and intellectual property rights (granted or applied for) held by participants prior to their accession to the grant agreement and which are needed for carrying out the project or using the foreground.

Background (Horizon 2020)

means, in the context of Horizon 2020, any data, know-how or information whatever its form or nature, tangible or intangible, including any rights such as intellectual property rights, which is:

  1. held by participants prior to their accession to the action;
  2. needed for carrying out the action or for exploiting the results of the action; and
  3. identified by the participants.

Beneficiary

means, in the context of FP7 and Horizon 2020, the legal person, other than the European Union or a funding body, who is a Party to the Grant Agreement.

Blockchain

is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value. It may be used to mark digital copyrights in a way that is both immutable and timestamped.

Blocking patents

patent applications which are strategically used as a barrier to pre-empt rivals from getting their patents granted and entering into markets and technologies.

Brand

identifies a specific product or name of a company as a sign of quality recognised by customers. A brand can be a trade mark if registered, but can also exist without being a trade mark.
