Rieko is Partner in the Intellectual Property Group of Bird&Bird based in Beijing.
Having lived in China for over nineteen years, she has acquired deep insights into the handling of legal matters in China. She has managed IP portfolios for global clients across numerous industries including gaming, publishing, retail, technology, electronics and industrial machinery. She has extensive experience in coordinating of IP disputes including patents, copyrights, trade mark, trade secrets and unfair competitions in China. Rieko leads the anti-counterfeiting practice in China and works closely with regional partners and specialists in the Asia Pacific region on cross-border matters.
She started her journey in China as a language student in Beijing in 1994 and was one of the first foreign students to study Chinese Law, undertaking the undergraduate programme at People’s University in 1996. After graduating, Rieko worked for a leading Japanese law firm in Beijing and moved to Shanghai to establish its second branch office. She then joined another leading law firm’s IP group in Hong Kong and relocated back to Shanghai, working there for five years. Rieko has also earned an LLM degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and qualified in New York.
