Design Protection in China - Session II Design Copyright, and Anti-unfair Competition Remedies

During the last session of the IP workshop - Design Protection in China, the IP Business Advisor, China IP SME Helpdesk, illustrated the copyright registration process in detail. A company can use copyright to protect its design; it is cheaper and easier than other options, and the design is automatically protected in 178 countries. However, a company should see copyright protection as a part of a broader IP strategy and register both design patents and copyright. She then analyzed the different copyright enforcement actions in case of copyright infringement. Collection and preservation of evidence is fundamental before taking any action.

Design Protection in China - Session I How to Register Design Patent and Enforcement

Design protection is essential not only for the creative industry but also for manufacturers developing unique design solutions. Under the current regulatory framework, design protection primarily falls under the scope of design patent. However, there are also other available design protection measures. The China IP SME Helpdesk and the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC) and its Intellectual Property Working Group (IPWG) jointly organised a Two-session IP Workshop “Design Protection in China". The first session was <How to Register Design Patent and Enforcement>. The IP Bussiness Advisor at China IP SME Helpdesk gave a presentation on “Design Patent Registration in China”. The IP Business Advisor gave an overview of design patent protection in China, underlining the difference between a national design patent and an international design.

Tapping into China’s E-Commerce Ecosystem While Protecting your IP

Throughout the past few years – and especially after the COVID-19 pandemic –E-commerce has seen a rapid expansion in China. While this presents opportunities for SMEs, these opportunities are contingent on businesses being able to understand and properly leverage the ecosystem. In addition, together with the opportunities, having a presence in E-commerce platforms also entails risks. In particular, E-Commerce platforms have become one of the most popular targets for intellectual property infringers. The EU SME Centre, IP SME Helpdesk and the European Chamber organised a Working Group meeting, where three experts shared practical tips on how to create a sound strategy to leverage China’s E-Commerce ecosystem and on how to prevent and address IP infringements in this space. EU Industry Week 2021

The EU Industry Days together with the EU Industry Week are Europe’s flagship annual events dedicated to its industry. As part of a wide range of stakeholders, the  IP Helpdesk has taken part this year to discuss industry challenges and policy responses. The regional IP Helpdesks from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and India as well as the EU-Japan Tech Transfer Helpdesk hosted several events, held a ‘Meet the expert’ virtual session and set up a joint information booth to answer IP-related questions.

Overall, the events focused on the main IP challenges in light of the European Green Deal, such as developing a comprehensive Intellectual Property strategy for SMEs in the cleantech sector and how to transfer and commercialise green technologies.

IP Protection at Online Trade Fairs in China

The China IP SME Helpdesk and the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) jointly organized a webinar on IP protection at online trade fairs in China. The webinar was presented by IP Business Advisor Matias Zubimendi, who gave insights into IP protection activities at online trade fairs in China. The topics addressed were the relevant regulations for IP registration and combating infringement in China.

Best IP Practices for Technology Transfer in China

The China IP SME Helpdesk, in collaboration with the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) organized a webinar on IP practices for technology transfer in China. The webinar was presented by IP Business Advisor Matias Zubimendi, who gave insights into technology transfer activites in China from an IP perspective. The topics addressed were the relevant rules and regulations for technology transfer in China, and the management and protection of licenses.

All Star Webinar: IP Management and Digitalisation

This webinar is a cooperation between the European IP Helpdesk, CEIPI, the International IP SME Helpdesks and the EU-Japan Technology Transfer Helpdesk. The session addresses the role of IP in digital business models, with examples like the use of digital patents. It targets innovation professionals in tech companies, law firms and IP offices that want to better understand the use of IP in business digitalisation.

How to internationally protect your trade marks using the Madrid system?

This webinar is a cooperation between the International IP SME Helpdesks aimed at addressing the protection of trade marks through the Madrid System. The session provides insights on the different strategies in the geographic areas covered by the Helpdesks and explains how to protect your TM globally through a single registration.

How to protect your intellectual property in China and South-east Asia

The South-East Asia and China IP SME Helpdesks organised an online training addressing IP Protection in this region in partnership with the Ylidiz Teknopark and its TTO. The webinar was given by the IP expert Simon Cheetham and covered the essential information on the different IP landscapes in the region with a specific focus on patent protection and tech-transfer, as well as the latest IP developments resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Brand Protection and IP in China and South-East Asia

The South-East Asia and China IP SME Helpdesk organised an online training addressing the impact of the pandemic on brand protection and IP in China and SEA. The webinar was given by the IP expert Simon Cheetham and covered the shift towards online markets and the resulting increase in counterfeited products, as well as other IP developments resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

IPR and the internationalisation of Artificial Intelligence

This webinar is a collaboration between the EIT and the China and South-East Asia IP SME Helpdesks, targeting start-ups with a general knowledge on Intellectual Property and with an interest in exploring opportunities to cooperate or use AI when doing business in China or South-East Asia. THe webinar will cover the main IPR related to AI and present different strategies to protect them in Asia.
