The global pandemic has further accelerated the digital transformation of businesses resulting in increased reliance on e-commerce platforms, boom in the AI-related industries and digitalisation of production and delivery processes. With digitalisation of businesses, consumption too has increasingly moved online. Intellectual property (IP) is crucial to the digital economy as it drives innovation and provides SMEs with a comparative advantage over competitors. While the digital economy brings about new IP risks like online infringements, it also creates new solutions for IP protection such as the use of blockchain technologies or reliance on sophisticated notice and take-down systems on e-commerce platforms, or even the use of internet courts speeding up IP enforcement procedures. To be successful in the digital economy, SMEs should focus on protecting their IP by adopting a comprehensive IP strategy taking into account the needs of the digital economy.
