Women Inventors Set New Historic Record in Patent Filings in 2025

Peru has marked a significant milestone in gender participation in innovation with a record share of patent filings led by women in 2025, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) reports. As part of activities around the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, authorities highlighted that 59% of national patent applications filed last year included at least one woman inventor, a substantial increase compared with previous years and the highest figure on record. This strong performance reflects a decade-long upward trend in female participation in patent activity, underscoring the growing role of women in research, technology, and invention across the country. 

Indecopi noted that this rise not only demonstrates increased inclusion of women in innovation but also suggests a broader diversification of scientific and technological development within Peru’s economy. The growing presence of inventors of different ages and regions contributes to a dynamic intellectual property environment, where women are playing a leading role in creating solutions with potential social, environmental, and economic impact. These advances were celebrated alongside global efforts to promote women’s full and equal participation in science and innovation, aligning with the spirit of the annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognised worldwide.
