Public awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights continues to grow globally, and new findings from WIPO Pulse 2025 shed light on evolving consumer perceptions in India and across the Asia-Pacific region.
Building on the 2023 edition, which assessed IP perceptions in 50 countries, WIPO Pulse 2025 represents a major expansion in scale and reach. The survey was conducted in 74 countries, based on 35,500 interviews, offering one of the most detailed global assessments to date of public awareness and attitudes toward intellectual property rights.
A key component of the survey focused on public views regarding the potential challenges posed by IP rights to national economies. While respondents across regions largely recognize the positive role of IP in fostering innovation, creativity and economic growth, the findings also reveal widespread acknowledgment of associated economic challenges, such as access, affordability and market concentration.
India has been a key driver of this positive shift, contributing significantly to the regional decline in perceived economic challenges associated with IP rights. This trend suggests increasing confidence among Indian consumers in the broader benefits of IP frameworks.
However, the study also notes that concerns remain relatively elevated in India, as well as in Viet Nam, with both countries still registering levels of concern above the Asia-Pacific regional average. These findings point to ongoing debates around the economic and social effects of IP protection in fast-growing and innovation-driven economies.
