The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Pathfinders Report brings together insights from more than 45 interviews with leading experts and thought leaders in the innovation and creative sectors. It examines how intellectual property (IP) based innovation and creativity could develop by 2034. Divided into four chapters, the report aims to help Member States and the broader IP community grasp how emerging trends might influence the future of the IP system, offering a basis for considering different medium- to long-term scenarios.
Participants highlighted a range of factors that could greatly influence how intellectual property shapes innovation and creativity over the next decade. These insights were organised using the PESTLE framework, covering political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental dimensions. Navigating these intersecting forces calls for thoughtful deliberation and strategic action to maintain the IP system’s relevance and ability to effectively support innovation and creativity in a rapidly evolving landscape.
Additionally, participants shared their thoughts on the critical changes required to ensure IP systems continue to drive innovation and creativity. Five priority areas or themes were identified:
- Modernizing regulation and policy frameworks
- Accelerating digital transformation
- Reinventing IP education
- Building stronger collaboration networks
- Ensuring IP relevance and inclusiveness.
