On 17 March, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII), a new initiative designed to foster expert dialogue on the intersection of intellectual property (IP) and artificial intelligence (AI). The platform focuses on technical and operational aspects of IP systems and complements ongoing policy discussions in other WIPO forums.
As AI technologies increasingly operate across sectors and borders, existing IP infrastructure—often developed for specific industries—faces new pressures and complexities. At the same time, these systems offer opportunities to adapt and evolve, as seen in previous technological shifts. AIII provides a neutral space where creators, rights holders, developers, and experts can exchange ideas and explore practical, collaborative solutions.
Modern IP infrastructure—including tools such as watermarks, metadata, digital identifiers, and content recognition systems—has largely been developed by the private sector to support diverse business models and protect rights in the digital environment. Experience shows that effective solutions emerge through collaboration between creators, rights holders, and technology providers.
While AIII does not establish policies or legal standards, it contributes valuable technical insights that can inform future decision-making. By enhancing transparency and understanding, the initiative supports WIPO Member States in shaping more informed and effective IP policies in the age of AI.
