Uruguay Introduces AI Assistant for Trademark Examination

Uruguay's National Directorate of Industrial Property and Software Registry (DNPI) has completed the development of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based assistant designed to support the formal examination of trademark applications. The initiative marks another milestone in the country's digital transformation of intellectual property services. 

Developed in-house, the AI assistant helps examiners analyse the documentation submitted with trademark applications, including trademark images, powers of attorney, payment information and other relevant records. The system can identify missing information, inconsistencies and potential issues, while also generating draft observations and administrative communications to support the examination process.

The tool is intended to improve efficiency, optimise the use of resources and promote greater consistency in formal examinations. Importantly, it has been designed as a decision-support system, with all outputs remaining subject to human review and validation by DNPI examiners.

By integrating AI into its examination procedures, the DNPI reinforces its commitment to responsible innovation and positions itself at the forefront of applying artificial intelligence to public administration and industrial property management in the region.
