Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) closed 2025 with historic highs in intellectual property (IP) filings, reflecting a robust upturn in innovation, entrepreneurship and economic activity across sectors.
The official statistics show that the INPI received significant increases across key IP categories in 2025. Patent applications increased to 29 557, marking a 6.7 % rise compared with 2024 and representing the strongest patent filing performance since 2016. Meanwhile, trademark requests went up to 504 461 — the first time filings have exceeded half a million in a single year. Industrial design applications also increased, with 9 872 submissions, a 35.7 % jump.
Software and technology sectors were particularly dynamic, with 6 892 computer program registrations, up 35.1 % year‑on‑year. This trend highlights the growing importance of digital products and software in Brazil’s innovation landscape.
Overall, INPI also approved more applications, with approved patents and trademarks growing by 5.5 % and 6.3 %, respectively. Industrial design grants more than doubled, climbing by 106.6 %, and suggesting that once filings are made, many are successfully moving through the examination pipeline.
The record figures not only point to increasing innovation but also to businesses placing greater strategic value on IP as a tool for competitiveness, market expansion, and investment attraction.
