The European Union has officially registered its first craft and industrial geographical indication (CIGI), marking a major milestone in the protection of Europe’s craft heritage. The French product Porcelaine de Limoges has become the first craft name to receive EU-wide geographical indication protection under the new scheme.
The registration provides strong safeguards against misuse, imitation, and misleading references, extending a model long used for agricultural products such as wines and cheeses to the craft and industrial sector. The new framework aims to protect products whose quality, reputation, or characteristics are closely linked to their geographical origin.
Since applications opened on 1 December 2025, the EU has already received 74 applications for CIGI protection. Countries including Czechia, France, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Sweden have been particularly active, reflecting strong interest in the scheme.
The applications cover a wide variety of traditional products, ranging from ceramics and embroidery to textiles, cutlery, and regional artisanal goods, highlighting the diversity and cultural value of Europe’s craft industries.
