Peru Ratifies WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge

Peru has ratified the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, marking another step towards the treaty's entry into force. The instrument of ratification was deposited with the WIPO on 8 July 2026.

As part of its ratification, Peru declared that it will promptly initiate the necessary domestic procedures to accept any future amendments to the Treaty adopted by the Assembly before they enter into force.

Adopted in May 2024, the Treaty aims to enhance transparency in the patent system by introducing disclosure requirements relating to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge used in patented inventions. It will enter into force once the required number of ratifications or accessions, as set out in Article 17, has been reached.
