QubeDot, a German deep-tech start-up, illustrates how collaborative European research and targeted innovation support can transform an early-stage idea into a commercial success.
Founded in 2019 by two long-time friends, the company specialises in the design and production of microLEDs and CMOS-integrated microLED displays, as well as advanced microLED-based products, including digital analysis devices for high-tech sectors. QubeDot’s origins trace back to technological advancements achieved through three European Innovation Council (EIC)-funded projects: ChipScope, SMILE, and iSMILE, which played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for the company’s development.
Throughout this journey, the company has developed case studies with customers to explore the commercial potential and customisation of microLED platforms which are areas that extended beyond the initial scope of the ChipScope and SMILE projects. In addition to strong partnerships and a clear sense of purpose, QubeDot’s success has been underpinned by a solid intellectual property (IP) portfolio and a strategic approach to IP management. The company currently pursues its EIC Accelerator funded project “iSMILE” started in 2024.
