Patent Landscape

A recently published Patent landscape analysis on advanced materials provides insights into how intellectual assets in this strategic technology field are protected, managed and commercialised across Europe, while comparing the EU’s position with the United States and China.

Covering patent activity between 2010 and 2024, the study examines five key sectors: mobility, construction, energy, electronics and medical devices. Its findings reveal a notable contrast between patent quantity and quality. While European companies and public research organisations file fewer patents than their counterparts in the US and China, European patent portfolios demonstrate strong international orientation, citation performance and high shares of triadic patent families. Particular strengths emerge in energy, medical and electronics materials.

However, translating these intellectual assets into market outcomes remains challenging. The study identifies long development cycles, high costs, limited IP expertise and an investment gap around TRL 4–5 as important barriers to commercialisation. It also points to challenges in industry–academia collaboration, where joint ownership of results remains limited despite widespread cooperation.

To strengthen Europe’s position, the report outlines several policy options, including clearer patenting guidance, greater support for scale-up, stronger knowledge valorisation frameworks, and an EU facilitating role in collaborative licensing mechanisms such as patent pools and clearinghouses.

Overall, the findings underline that strengthening Europe’s advanced materials ecosystem will require not only generating high-quality intellectual assets, but also improving the conditions for their valorisation, financing and market uptake.
