A spin-off, also called a "spin-out," is a separate legal entity formed by a parent organisation (PO) to leverage its intellectual assets. Once established, the PO transfers or licenses the relevant intellectual property (IP) to the spin-off, enabling it to commercialise these assets.
Our team has recently published a new fact sheet “Commercialising Intellectual Property: Spin-offs” that deals with the creation and management of spin-offs as instruments for the commercialisation of IP rights. The fact sheet highlights essential factors for establishing a successful spin-off company, focusing primarily on intellectual property related aspects that support its success. Universities and Research Organisations (ROs) frequently create spin-offs as a strategy to capitalise on and derive economic value from the knowledge they generate, given that they often lack the necessary resources to directly market their intangible assets.
