Out Now: New Bulletin Issue on Open Innovation

Innovation is now a collaborative process, as the ever-more complicated problems of today's fast changing terrain demand. The old methods of creating and introducing new technology, goods, and services to the market have been transformed by the idea of Open Innovation, which involves businesses working together across boundaries to leverage external information and ideas.

Since Henry Chesbrough's influential book, Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology, published in 2003, there has been much discourse around the shift companies and their research and development (R&D) departments need to make from closed innovation practices to exploring fresh pathways for creating new solutions. By actively collaborating with external partners—ranging from start-ups and academic institutions to even competitors—firms open up new possibilities for enhancing creativity, improving efficiency, and boosting competitiveness. However, with this collaborative approach comes a critical challenge: managing intellectual property (IP).

The European IP Helpdesk team has recently released a new Bulletin on Open Innovation. With this edition, we explore the evolution of Open Innovation approaches and practices over the years, while also examining the complex relationship between Open Innovation and IP management.
