The International IP SME Helpdesks have jointly published a new guide to help European small and medium enterprises (SMEs) prevent and respond to counterfeiting risks when entering and operating in international markets.
Counterfeit and pirated goods continue to pose a major challenge to businesses worldwide, affecting innovation, consumer trust, and economic growth. According to estimates from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), counterfeit trade accounted for up to 2.5% of global trade in 2019 and represented 5.8% of EU imports, with an estimated value of €120 billion. Customs authorities have also reported a sharp increase in seizures of counterfeit goods in recent years.
The guide provides practical advice on managing counterfeiting risks throughout the business lifecycle, from market entry to enforcement. It explains how intellectual property (IP) rights, including trademarks, designs, patents, and copyrights, can help businesses protect their products and brands, while outlining strategies for detecting, preventing, and responding to infringement.
Designed specifically for European SMEs, the publication offers practical guidance for navigating key counterfeit markets and transit regions, helping businesses strengthen their IP strategies and safeguard their innovations internationally.
