Out Now: dotLumen Case Study - Advancing Pedestrian Autonomy Through Patented Innovation

The European IP Helpdesk team has released a new case study showcasing dotLumen, a Romanian deep-tech start-up transforming mobility for visually impaired people through cutting-edge, patent-protected innovation. 

Founded in 2020, dotLumen develops smart glasses that replicate the capabilities of a guide dog, offering real-time navigation through haptic feedback instead of sound. The technology, validated with more than 300 users across nearly 30 countries, provides safe and intuitive pedestrian guidance without relying on internet connectivity. 

The case study traces dotLumen’s journey from a personal mission to a globally recognised company, highlighting how the integration of intellectual property (IP) strategy from day one helped secure the foundation for its breakthrough innovation. With a portfolio including four granted U.S. patents and protection extended to over 70 countries, dotLumen demonstrates how a clear, early IP roadmap can build credibility, attract investors, and accelerate market readiness. 

As the first Romanian start-up to receive funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, dotLumen leveraged this support to scale its R&D, strengthen its IP portfolio, and move towards commercialisation. Beyond patents, the company combines protected technologies with trade secrets and proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models, ensuring a balanced and strategic approach to safeguarding innovation in the fast-evolving field of deep tech and AI. 

The case study also reflects on lessons learned, from the importance of early IP planning and prior art research to the role of IP in investor trust and global expansion. dotLumen’s story illustrates how technology, purpose, and protection can work hand in hand to deliver meaningful social impact.
