The European Commission has published new Practical Guidance for the Valorisation of Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Results, designed to help research projects translate multidisciplinary knowledge into societal and economic value.
Multidisciplinary research, including the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), can play an important role in addressing complex societal challenges, strengthening competitiveness and developing more human-centred innovations. However, turning diverse research outputs into products, services, solutions or evidence-informed policies can be challenging, and their potential for wider uptake often remains underexploited.
Building on the EU Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation and the ERA Policy Agenda 2025–2027, the new guidance presents 10 practical valorisation pathways. These range from human-centred technology and participatory innovation to entrepreneurship, organisational change and evidence-informed policymaking.
The publication also includes decision trees, examples and checklists to help research teams identify suitable pathways based on their results and intended impact. It provides practical support for determining which users, partners and intermediaries should be involved and for planning the next steps towards uptake.
Developed on the basis of EU-funded and national R&I projects, practitioner interviews and expert input, the guidance provides a practical resource for researchers and innovation actors seeking to unlock the wider potential of multidisciplinary research.
