Following the adoption of the new EU Regulation on the protection of craft and industrial products and a series of important developments in the field, the European IP Helpdesk is pleased to announce the release of a new IP Special dedicated to Geographical Indications (GIs) in the European Union.
This timely edition offers a comprehensive look at the evolving landscape of GIs—an intellectual property right that safeguards the names of products with qualities, characteristics, or reputations linked to a specific geographical origin. Long associated with food and agricultural products, GIs are now being extended to include craft and industrial goods, marking a significant expansion in the EU’s intellectual property framework.
The new IP Special features three key materials designed to provide a broader understanding of this unique intellectual property right and offers a clear overview of the fundamental aspects of GIs, including their different types, the benefits they bring, and the registration procedures within the EU system.
