New Factsheet Explores Plant Variety Protection in Latin America’s Agri-Food Sector

A new factsheet on “IP in the Agri-Food Sector (ii) – Plant Varieties” sheds light on the importance of intellectual property protection in one of Latin America’s most dynamic industries. Over the past two decades, the region’s agri-food sector has grown into a global powerhouse, driven by abundant natural resources, rich biodiversity, technological innovation, and evolving market demands.

Latin America is also a key exporter to the European Union, with countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Peru playing a major role in agri-food trade. In this context, protecting plant varieties has become increasingly important for fostering innovation and competitiveness.

Building on a previous factsheet on geographical indications, this publication provides an overview of plant variety protection, including how to obtain protection in Latin America, specific registration procedures in selected countries, and key differences between plant varieties and trademarks. It also highlights success stories, as well as common challenges faced by applicants.
