For many years, philanthropy and traditional investment were regarded as separate domains—one focused on social impact, the other on financial returns. The idea that both objectives could be combined within a single strategy was often seen as unrealistic. Today, this perception is evolving, as impact investing gains momentum as an approach that seeks to generate measurable social and environmental benefits alongside financial performance.
Although no universally agreed framework exists, impact investing is commonly defined by its focus on tangible outcomes, such as reducing carbon emissions, improving livelihoods, or expanding economic opportunities. Behind these visible results, however, lies a critical yet often underappreciated factor: intellectual property (IP). Far from being purely legal in nature, IP plays a central role in determining how innovations are accessed, scaled, and ultimately deliver value to society.
In this context, the European IP Helpdesk has published a new Bulletin edition that explores impact investing from multiple perspectives and examines its link to IP management. The publication highlights how responsible IP practices—such as impact licensing—can support the effective translation of research and innovation into societal and economic value. It also features expert interviews, insights from practitioners, and practical examples illustrating how impact investment ecosystems are evolving in practice.
