New Case Study: Ullmanna – How a Czech Startup is Changing Weed Control with AI

The European IP Helpdesk team has recently published a new case study featuring Ullmanna, a Czech start-up transforming the future of sustainable farming through AI-powered precision weeding. Combining deep-tech expertise with hands-on agricultural knowledge, Ullmanna addresses the growing need for non-chemical, cost-effective weed control methods, helping farmers reduce dependency on herbicides and tackle labour shortages in the sector.

The case study follows Ullmanna’s journey from a family-driven innovation to a market-ready solution, highlighting the strategic milestones that enabled the company’s growth across Europe and beyond. It illustrates how smart intellectual property (IP) management, combining patent protection and trade secrets, played a critical role in securing the company’s core technology and facilitating expansion into international markets.

With support from EU-funded programmes, Ullmanna was able to advance its research and development, validate its solution in real farming conditions, and shift from building full machines to focusing on its core innovation: AI-powered camera systems that can be integrated into weeding machines built by other manufacturers. The case also underscores the importance of early-stage IP support and how mentoring helped Ullmanna navigate complex patentability issues to eventually secure protection for 23 invention claims through an international patent application.
