NeuroSoV building a global IP foundation for disease modifying therapies in Parkinson’s disease

The European IP Helpdesk has published a new case study featuring NeuroSoV, a Portuguese biotechnology spin-off developing a novel therapeutic approach aimed at slowing the progression of Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the University of Beira Interior, NeuroSoV builds on more than a decade of academic research. Its lead candidate, N1(4)inh-IL, targets oxidative stress — a key mechanism involved in PD progression — by inhibiting the NOX1 and NOX4 enzymes. The therapy is delivered intranasally, offering a non-invasive administration route designed to improve brain delivery. As the project evolves, the underlying invention is increasingly viewed as a platform based on ionic-liquid technology with potential applications across multiple indications.

The case study highlights the company’s journey from long-term research to preclinical development and preparation for clinical transition, underlining the scientific, regulatory, and financial challenges typical of pharmaceutical innovation. From an early stage, intellectual property has been central to this pathway. Following proof of concept, NeuroSoV filed its first patent in 2022 and expanded internationally via the PCT route. Today, the company manages a growing global IP portfolio, supported by an exclusive licence agreement with its academic partners, a registered trademark, and protected trade secrets.

NeuroSoV’s experience illustrates how early and strategic IP planning can strengthen funding prospects, enable partnership discussions, and support the translation of academic research into therapeutic innovation addressing urgent unmet medical needs.
