Innovation is increasingly shaped not by individual actors alone, but by interconnected innovation ecosystems where universities, companies, start-ups, public authorities, and intermediaries collaborate to create, share, and scale knowledge. Within these ecosystems, intellectual assets—including patents, data, know-how, standards, and governance models—play a crucial role in enabling collaboration and generating value.
Reflecting this growing importance, the European IP Helpdesk has published a new Bulletin edition exploring how intellectual asset management can support resilient, collaborative, and high-performing innovation ecosystems. The publication examines how strategic management of intellectual assets contributes to knowledge flows, innovation scaling, and the creation of both societal and economic impact.
The Bulletin also places these developments within the broader EU policy context, highlighting initiatives such as the EU Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation, the New European Innovation Agenda, the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy, and discussions surrounding the future of Horizon Europe.
Across the different contributions, a common message emerges: successful innovation ecosystems depend not only on collaboration itself, but also on the ability to govern knowledge effectively, manage intellectual assets strategically, and align incentives among diverse stakeholders. As Europe advances ambitious research and innovation policies, strengthening these capabilities will be essential to fully unlock the potential of its innovation ecosystem.
