The international community of Geographical Indications (GIs) celebrates a significant milestone with the official establishment of oriGIn Latin America (LatAm), a new regional chapter of the global Organization for an International Geographical Indications Network (oriGIn). This initiative reinforces Latin America’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting its diverse portfolio of origin-based products.
Latin America is home to some of the world’s most emblematic geographical denominations—such as Café de Colombia, Mezcal, Tequila, Pisco, and Cacao Arriba—each tied to unique cultural traditions, ecosystems, and regional expertise. The creation of oriGIn LatAm responds to the growing demand for more decisive collective action to protect these products, enhance market value, and expand international recognition.
oriGIn LatAm will focus on:
- Supporting producers and institutions with capacity-building related to GI governance, legal frameworks, quality schemes, and enforcement.
- Promoting regional cooperation and knowledge exchange across countries and value chains.
- Accompanying communities in new GI applications, including specification development, traceability models, and collective management structures.
- Increasing the international visibility of Latin American GIs in global markets.
- Providing technical and legal assistance to tackle counterfeiting, misuse, and challenges related to cross-border protection.
With this regional chapter, Latin America consolidates a unified voice in global GI discussions and positions itself as a relevant actor in leveraging GIs for sustainable development, rural income generation, cultural heritage preservation, and export competitiveness.
“oriGIn Latin America will strengthen the ecosystem of origin-linked products by connecting producers, authorities, and technical partners across the region,” the organisation stated. “It is a decisive step toward building stronger, more resilient value chains anchored in quality, authenticity, and territorial identity.”
The new chapter is expected to enhance cooperation with governments, development agencies, and international partners committed to supporting GI systems as drivers of inclusive and sustainable growth.
